Karen "Mal" Malme

Mal has been roaming enthusiastically around the stages of the Boston area for over a decade. Her performance background includes improv comedy with Guilty Children, a writer, producer and performer with Aunt Evy's Comedy Bee, an all women's sketch and improv comedy troupe, and one half of the coed queer comedy duo, The Brian+Mal Show, with her deliciously talented longtime comedy partner, Brian Jewell.

Brian+Mal performed together in high schools across Massachusetts, in Provincetown, at the National GLBT Theater Festival and created and performed several original productions, including It Came From Brian+Mal, The Big Dish, and Brian+Mal: Unbound, all of which were directed by Renee C. Farster. Other stage highlights include roles as Stanley in Open City's production of Belle Reprieve, as Al Dente in Triangle Theater's production of The Well of Horniness, as Scott in T&A Theater's production of Gender Bender, as Xander in Queer Soup's production of Buffy The Vampire Slayer's High School Reunion and lastly, as a drag performer, Duke Malvis with the Boston based drag burlesque performance troupe, The Princesses of Porn with The Dukes of Dykedom which has performed at Vixen in Provincetown for the past few summers and various other venues with a trail of red lipstick and broken hearts behind them.

As an out lesbian genderqueer actor, Mal aspires to using her gift of humor to create a society free from homophobia and to make schools safer places for GLBT students. To that end, she performs educational comedy shows in middle and high schools across Massachusetts. Her show, "That's So Gay!" has appeared in eight high schools this past year.

She is a co-founder, writer, performer and producer with Queer Soup. And is also a co-founder and performer with Only Fooling, an all women's physical comedy and clown troupe that performs shows for all ages.  For the past eight years, Mal has been clown doctor with The Big Apple Circus Clown Care at Boston Children's Hospital and has spent three weeks in Paris, France working with Le Rire Medecin through Clown Care's international exchange program. Mal also reviewed films for the Here and Now show on WBUR, Boston's NPR station.
